Karat calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the value of my gold?
Multiply the weight in grams by the live price per gram for its karat — that's exactly what the calculator above does. Note that jewelry resale prices are usually a little below the metal value, because dealers deduct a margin when buying.
What does karat actually mean?
Karat measures purity out of 24 parts. 24K is pure gold (99.9%); 22K is 91.7%; 21K — common across the Middle East — is 87.5%; and 18K is 75%. The remainder is alloy metals like copper and silver that make jewelry more durable.
Why did the jeweler quote a different price?
When buying new jewelry you also pay a making (labor) charge and sometimes tax on top of the metal value; when selling, jewelers pay slightly under it. This calculator shows the pure metal value so you can judge whether a quote is fair. The GoldSignal app also shows live jeweler buy/sell prices for Egypt and India.
Can I calculate silver too?
Yes — the GoldSignal app includes a silver calculator for 999, 925 and other finenesses, plus live silver prices. See the live silver price page for current rates.
